1. What is the difference between tutoring students and coaching them?
Tutoring focuses on a specific branch of learning such as mathematics, whereas coaching teaches students the broader skills that allow them to achieve success in any subject. We focus on the student’s current course work and plan for upcoming assignments while using these to teach students better study habits and learning skills.
2. Where do the sessions typically take place?
One-on-one coaching sessions are preferably held at any local library or, in some instances, at the family’s home.
3. How long are the individual sessions?
Beginning with students no younger than grade 8, we recommend a 75-90 minute session every week. In addition to the time spent with students, coaches connect with them between sessions by text or email to see how the week is going.
4. How long does the coaching process typically take?
Coaching usually results in big changes, but they do not happen quickly; transformation takes anywhere from three to 10 months. For many students, we are essentially helping them discover their own philosophy of learning while also guiding them in becoming self-directed learners. Progress is highly dependent on key factors, such as individual maturity, motivation and self-awareness. If after a few sessions, a student or the parent decides that the program is not a good fit, then coaching will be discontinued.
5. How does this program promote independence?
We begin with considerable support and then gradually shift the responsibility to the student whereby they begin to use the acquired tools and strategies capably on their own.
6. What days/hours are sessions offered?
Coaching sessions can be conducted anytime after school, in the evening or even on the weekend.
7. What are the backgrounds of the coaches?
Just like our lead coach, ancillary coaches are usually teaching or have taught in schools for many years. All of them have experience working one-to-one with students.
8. How much does it cost?
High-quality coaching is a significant investment. We begin with a 90 minute intake session, which includes a thorough review of all records and a consultation with both the parent and student. The intake costs $90. Thereafter, our hourly rate is $50 per hour.
9. How often do I pay?
Initially, you just pay for the intake. Then, if you feel positive, you pay upfront for five sessions at a time.
10. How do we get started?
Begin by contacting us by phone or email. Our first job is to get to know you and your child’s situation during a free phone consultation. We tell you about the service we provide to make sure they’re a good match for your child.
